Hello everyone! We hope you had a pleasant weekend. After Apple last month, it’s Samsung’s turn to talk about its Messages application and RCS. But what exactly is RCS? Answer in this week’s #AskGriots!

The SMS replacement 📨

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an advanced communication protocol designed to replace traditional SMS (Short Message Service).

It offers features similar to modern messaging apps, such as group messaging, high-quality file sharing, and read and typing indicators. RCS also allows sending longer messages, higher quality images and videos, as well as the ability to share one’s location.

A gradual adoption 🚂

RCS aims to work seamlessly across different operators and devices, unlike proprietary messaging apps. Unlike SMS which uses the traditional cellular network, RCS operates on mobile data or Wi-Fi networks. It generally offers a better level of security than SMS, with end-to-end encryption available on some implementations.

Although promising, its adoption is not yet universal and depends on support from operators and smartphone manufacturers.
