Following the arrest of Telegram’s CEO in France, many questions have emerged about the platform. Among these questions, that of the messaging service’s security comes up frequently. This week Ask Griots takes a closer look at the subject to provide some answers.
YES …
Telegram offers end-to-end encryption for so-called « secret » conversations. This means that only the participants in the conversation can read the messages. The messages are not stored on Telegram’s servers and can only be decrypted by the participants’ devices.
In secret chats, you can set a timer for self-destructing messages after a certain period, further enhancing the privacy of the conversations.
BUT !
Unlike other applications like Signal, Telegram does not apply end-to-end encryption by default for all conversations. Regular chats and group discussions can be accessible on Telegram’s servers.
It’s also important to note that Telegram uses a proprietary encryption protocol called MTProto, which has not been fully audited and validated by the security community. This raises questions about the actual robustness of its encryption.
