Senegal recently launched its very first satellite. With this launch, the country enters a new era for its development. But why is the launch of a satellite so important? Answer in this week’s #Askgriots.

Communication & innovation

Artificial satellites are launched into space to orbit the Earth or other planets. They can play a significant role in a country’s technological development in a number of ways.

They improve communications by enabling widespread Internet coverage, even in rural or isolated areas. In the education, innovation and research sectors, they provide data for climate, oceanographic and atmospheric research, and stimulate research and development in cutting-edge fields.

Resource management

In terms of resource management, they help monitor crops, forests and water resources, enabling more efficient management. They also facilitate urban and land-use planning, and enable better forecasting and management of natural disasters.

The development of satellite capabilities can thus act as a catalyst for technological innovation and economic progress in a country.
