After the Universities of Yaoundé 1 and 2, Bertoua is also joining the fight against plagiarism. From now on, anti-plagiarism software will analyze all Master’s theses from the Faculty of Arts, Letters, and Human Sciences (Falsh). These theses will then be validated for defense. This measure aims to ensure authentic work and strengthen academic ethics.
Controlling the quality of research 🖥️
Plagiarism is a major issue in higher education. To address it, the university has decided to implement a systematic review of theses before any defense. Concretely, each submitted document will go through software that will analyze its content to detect possible similarities with existing sources.
According to Professor Christian Tsala Tsala, Vice-Rector in charge of teaching and professionalization, this initiative aims to guarantee high-quality work. It also encourages students to produce original research.
An initiative inspired by other universities 🎓
The University of Bertoua is not the first to implement such a system. In 2021, the University of Yaoundé II-Soa was a pioneer in integrating plagiarism detection software for theses and dissertations. Since then, several institutions have followed suit, with encouraging results.
By learning from these experiences, the University of Bertoua hopes to improve research quality. It is also focusing on raising students’ awareness of best practices in citation and academic writing.
The university community welcomes the initiative 👍
The introduction of this software is supported by teachers and researchers. Josué Madine, a PhD student at the University of Ngaoundéré, sees this advancement as a necessity.
« Research is based on intellectual honesty and rigor. Copy-pasting only weakens the value of scientific work. This measure is an excellent initiative to preserve academic integrity. »
By requiring students to adhere to academic standards, this reform encourages better structuring of ideas and more in-depth work.
Towards more rigorous training 🚀
The integration of this software is not just about penalizing fraud. It also aims to establish a true culture of academic excellence. By understanding the importance of personal, well-referenced work, students will develop better research skills.
If this initiative proves successful, it could be extended to other institutions, contributing to a general improvement in the quality of scientific publications in Cameroon.
