The 13th edition of the International Conference on Cervical Cancer Prevention and Screening took place from March 19 to 20, 2026, at the Higher Technical Teachers’ Training College in Yaoundé. It brought together the NGO RSD Institute and a delegation from Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health, all aligned around a shared goal: strengthening strategies to combat a disease that remains a major public health challenge.
AI leading the way in labs 🔬
Artificial intelligence is steadily emerging as a decisive lever in screening systems. A machine learning model can now pre-filter images from digital colposcopy in under 800 milliseconds.
This innovation is helping transform the detection of precancerous lesions by standardizing visual inspection and improving the reliability of diagnostic algorithms used to classify high-risk areas.
Beyond the technological breakthrough, experts highlight a more human reality: AI is becoming a bridge between medical expertise and accessibility. It allows knowledge to cross geographical barriers and reach patients even in the most remote communities.
Unlocking vaccination strategies 💉
During the discussions, several approaches were explored to improve vaccination coverage against the human papillomavirus (HPV). Among them, the so-called “mother-daughter” strategy stands out as a priority model, designed to strengthen awareness and significantly increase vaccine uptake in Cameroon.
The rise of telehealth practices 🌐
Another key pillar is the growing adoption of telehealth. Tele-cytology and tele-expertise are enabling healthcare professionals in rural areas to benefit from specialized support.
Through these systems, isolated patients can now be connected to experts, including international specialists. This approach enhances the quality of care by enabling faster, more reliable diagnoses and better medical guidance.
Taking local realities into account 🌍
This innovative initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s targets, particularly the 90-70-90 strategy. It also provided an opportunity for the National Cancer Control Committee to present its new roadmap toward 2030.
With the integration of technology, the fight against cervical cancer is increasingly positioned as a major priority in Cameroon for the years ahead.
