You’ve probably noticed it while watching the evening news: a presenter’s glasses suddenly throw off strange reflections, dark patches, or flickering distortions on screen. It’s not a random glitch — it comes down to the precise physics of how lenses handle light.

What actually happens between glasses and cameras 🔬

The culprit isn’t the frame, it’s the lens itself, and specifically how it reflects and transmits light. TV sets stack multiple light sources at once — ambient lighting, spotlights, LED panels — and depending on how the lens is treated, some of that light bounces straight back into the camera lens, creating white glare and halos. Camera sensors, which are sensitive to specific wavelengths, only make the effect more visible on air.

Not all lenses behave the same way 👓

An untreated, high-index lens with a stronger curve reflects more light back toward the camera. Polarized lenses can produce dark bands or rainbow-like streaks when they meet an LED screen, particularly when the panel’s own light output is partially polarized. Photochromic lenses, which technically react to UV rather than brightness, reportedly shouldn’t darken under standard studio lighting — though some especially powerful rigs do emit enough UV to trigger a slight tint shift. Anti-reflective coating, by contrast, applied in multiple layers on both sides of the lens, cuts these distortions down noticeably by letting useful light through instead of bouncing it back.
