Most of the time, messaging apps take inspiration from Telegram to offer new features. This time, it’s the other way around: Telegram is currently working on a feature that has become commonplace on messengers and social networks: stories.
Stories coming to Telegram in July 🤩
In the own words of Telegram founder Pavel Dourov, the team behind the app was initially against adding stories because they’re already everywhere. However, due to user demand, the team relented.
For years, our users have been asking us to implement Stories in Telegram. More than half of all feature requests that we receive are related to Stories.
Initially, we were against this since Stories are already everywhere. However, Telegram wouldn’t be Telegram if we didn’t listen to our users and didn’t innovate on existing formats.
With these words, Pavel Dourov announced the arrival of stories on Telegram, via its official channel, and in true Telegram way. The main features highlighted are as follows:
- Privacy : As WhatsApp did earlier this year with the audience selector for its statuses (Click here to learn all about it), Telegram will give you the option of defining precisely who can see each story: everyone, only your contacts (with exceptions), a few selected contacts or a list of close friends.
- Dual-camera support : Telegram will take its cue from Snapchat and enable simultaneous posting of photos and videos taken by both front and rear cameras.
- Optional ephemerality : You can choose from several expiration times: 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours. If you wish to display stories permanently on your profile page, this will also be possible.
- Compact UI : Telegram will adopt a display similar to Instagram’s. Stories will be placed in an expandable section at the top of your chat list, making them easily accessible.
- Flexibility : Just like on WhatsApp, you’ll be able to hide stories posted by any contact by moving them to the « Hidden » list in your Contacts section.
- Captions : Telegram will let you add captions to your stories to add more context or links, and tag other people. You’ll also be able to use dozens of photo and video editing tools.
Pavel Durov promises many more surprises. Stories are still in the testing phase and will be available by July. In the meantime, you can get a taste of this feature by watching the video below.
