WhatsApp has been rather discreet lately in terms of new features. But that doesn’t mean its teams aren’t working. Recently, new features have been introduced concerning e-mail addresses and calls on the platform.

Add an e-mail address to your WhatsApp account 📧

Since its early days, WhatsApp has worked exclusively with phone numbers. Without it, there’s no account. But it is now possible to associate an e-mail address, adding an extra level of security to the messaging service.

Thanks to this e-mail address, you’ll be able to retrieve your account even without logging in for SMS or phone calls. If you need to re-register your phone number, you can also use your verified e-mail address to reconnect to your account.

The e-mail address can be added at registration or at any time in the settings. Simply go to the Account menu, then to E-mail Address.

WhatsApp improves calls on desktop and mobile 📞

Although WhatsApp began as a messaging platform, it quickly became an alternative to traditional calls. For many users, it is the default platform for audio and video calls. WhatsApp has announced that updates to improve mobile and desktop calling will be rolled out over the coming weeks. These improvements include:

  • Screen sharing with audio: in addition to being able to share your screen, you can now stream audio simultaneously, perfect for watching videos together.
  • Video calls with more participants: up to 32 people can take part, regardless of the device used.
  • Highlighting the speaker: easily identify the person speaking thanks to their foreground appearance and on-screen highlighting.

But that’s not all. WhatsApp has also announced a special focus on audio and video quality to deliver clearer calls, wherever you are. Mobile calls will benefit from improved noise and echo suppression in noisy environments, while video calls will display superior broadband resolution. Sound will be sharper overall, even when network connectivity is poor or you’re using an older device.

Do you use WhatsApp? If so, what do you think of these new features? Tell us in the comments.
