WhatsApp is set to revolutionize how users manage their contacts. Meta’s messaging app is introducing several significant innovations aimed at simplifying contact addition and management while enhancing privacy.
An Alternative to Phone Numbers: Usernames 🥸
Until now, adding a contact on WhatsApp required entering a phone number or scanning a QR code from a smartphone. With the upcoming update, users will be able to manage and add contacts directly from WhatsApp Web or the Windows app, with other devices soon to follow. No more manually adding numbers to the phone’s address book.
One of the most anticipated updates is the introduction of usernames. This provides a new way to connect with others without exchanging phone numbers. It adds an extra layer of privacy, allowing users to connect by simply sharing their username without exposing their personal number. This is ideal for those who want to maintain privacy or keep personal and professional contacts separate.
WhatsApp-Only Contacts 🔒
The app also introduces “WhatsApp-only contacts,” enabling users to store contacts exclusively within WhatsApp, separate from the phone’s address book. This makes it easier to manage professional or occasional contacts, keeping them on the app without cluttering the main contact list. This feature is especially useful for those who share their phone or manage multiple WhatsApp accounts on a single device.
Contacts saved exclusively on WhatsApp will be backed up and automatically restored, even if the user changes or loses their phone. This multi-device sync function also allows users to manage their contacts in real time from any connected device without manual syncing with the primary phone.
A Paradigm Shift in Contact Management 😮
Meta has not yet announced a specific date for the deployment of these new features. However, the tech giant assures that these changes will not compromise the app’s security. This shift marks an initial step toward modernizing contact management on WhatsApp, with more improvements expected in the coming months.
This redesign of the contact system is a strategic turning point for WhatsApp, clearly aiming to adapt to new user needs while reinforcing privacy protection.
