At the Douala Economic Forum (November 11–15), university experts unveiled technological and entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at boosting territorial growth and addressing local challenges. On November 12, 2024, at the Sawa Cultural Center, a panel titled « University Solutions for Territorial Development » was held as part of the forum.

Technology as a driver of development 📡

Moderated by Annie Payep-Nlepe, journalist and founder of Impact Media, the discussion brought together specialists in university innovation. They highlighted the role of higher education institutions in fostering economic and social transformation through concrete technological solutions.

Dr. Ifriky Tadadjeu, director of the School of Digital Technology and Innovation at JFN, introduced innovative concepts such as the digital twin. This virtual model simulates solutions before their real-world implementation, significantly reducing failures while speeding up processes.

Dr. Tadadjeu also emphasized the importance of utilizing climate data from satellites to meet population needs. Through a digital platform developed by JFN, solutions are being tested to improve access to potable water, energy, and road infrastructure.

Polytech Douala: bridging innovation and funding 💡

During the discussions, Serge Nkene Zogo, representing Polytech Douala, presented a participatory approach to a common challenge: innovators often lack funding, while investors struggle to identify promising projects. To address this, Polytech launched the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exchange, a platform connecting the two.

One flagship project from this initiative is Inform’All City, a geolocation tool digitizing tax collection from street vendors and informal traders. This project could enable cities like Douala to tackle 80% of their urban challenges through optimized management of local financial resources.

IUT Douala: concrete projects for local solutions 🛠️

At the Douala University Institute of Technology (IUT), Professor Francis Koffi Djanna showcased initiatives aimed at training agents of change, including :

  • Converting combustion vehicles into electric cars as an eco-friendly response to urban mobility.
  • Developing connected medical kiosks to enhance access to healthcare in remote areas.

The IUT adopts a project-based learning approach, equipping students with skills directly applicable in the job market. Partnerships with companies provide access to state-of-the-art equipment in fields like civil engineering, mechatronics, and logistics management.

« Our projects are not theoretical. They address real needs, ensuring rapid integration of our graduates into the professional world, » Professor Djanna told the media.

Promising initiatives for sustainable transformation 🌟

These technological and educational solutions go beyond theory. They are designed to address the tangible challenges faced by local populations, facilitate the swift integration of graduates, and stimulate the digital economy.

With tools like the digital twin, innovative platforms like Inform’All City, and strategic partnerships, Cameroonian universities are positioning themselves as key players in territorial development. By strengthening their role in the country’s social and economic transformation, they are paving the way for a more sustainable future.
