Cameroon won the 3rd edition of the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards, held from April 14 to 15, thanks to its Ym@ne Driver system. This is an artificial intelligence-based solution designed to monitor driver behavior on the road.

Ym@ne Driver Detects Risky Driving Behavior ⚠️

Deployed since January 2025 on 1,500 vehicles, Ym@ne Driver has helped identify over 32,800 traffic violations in just a few months. The system detects dangerous driving in real time, such as speeding, and also monitors phone use behind the wheel and signs of drowsiness, sending alerts to help prevent accidents.

Buoyed by this recognition, Cameroonian authorities plan to roll out the technology nationwide. The project is led by the Ministry of Transport, in partnership with MTN Cameroon and Camtrack GPS.

A Holistic Approach to Road Safety Recognized 🏅

Beyond the Ym@ne Driver system itself, the Kofi Annan Road Safety Awards celebrates Cameroon’s broader efforts to improve road safety. Among the recognized initiatives:

  • the reform of the driver’s license issuance process;
  • the digitalization of transport documents;
  • the modernization of vehicle inspections;
  • and the ongoing development of a national road accident data collection system.

The award ceremony took place in Ezulwini, in the Kingdom of Eswatini. The prize honors the structural reforms implemented by the country. Jean Ernest Masséna Ngalle Bibehe, Minister of Transport and head of the Cameroonian delegation, dedicated the award to President Paul Biya:

“This award is for our Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya. He spares no effort to reduce road accidents in our country.”
