Elon Musk’s SpaceX has unveiled Starlink Mini, a compact, lightweight version of its satellite internet antenna. This innovation promises to transform Internet access for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, but not only.

A compact, high-performance Internet solution 📡

Starlink Mini is distinguished by its compact dimensions. It measures just 298.5 x 259 x 38.5 mm and weighs just 1.1 kg. This antenna integrates the Wi-Fi router directly into the dish, offering an all-in-one solution. It can also be powered by a standard USB external battery. Using a 10,000mAh powerbank, for example, you can power it for just over an hour. It requires a USB-C PD power source with a minimum output of 100 W (20 V/5 A). This compact format doesn’t compromise performance, with download speeds in excess of 100 Mbps. Power consumption is reduced to 20-40W, compared with 33-62W for previous models.

Designed for Modern Adventurers, but not only 🏞️

One of the main attractions of the Starlink Mini is its portability. Despite its reduced size, it offers robust connectivity, although the integrated Wi-Fi router is in the 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) standard, compared with the 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) of the larger models. This difference could slightly affect the quality of the connection, but for classic Internet use, it’s still more than sufficient. Weighing around 60% less than the standard version, it’s ideal for travelers, but not only. Its portability and the possibility of being powered by a powerbank make this new antenna the ally of people living in areas with problems of access to electricity. Indeed, such people are often obliged to use powerbanks or to move around in search of electrical power.

Pricing and availability🤑

The Starlink Mini kit is priced at $599, $100 more than the standard antenna. It also requires an additional $30/month subscription for the Mini Roam service, on top of the $120/month residential subscription. This entitles the user to 50GB of mobile data per month. Additional data can also be purchased at $1 per GB.

For the time being, the Starlink Mini is available as an add-on to residential plans in the USA and selected countries in Central and South America, with no data or speed limits in these regions. SpaceX plans to extend its availability to other markets over time.

Some French stores, such as Darty, are already listing the antenna at €349 without subscription, i.e. €100 more than the standard antenna. We’ll have to wait and see on the various markets.

Do you use or have you ever used a Starlink antenna? If so, what do you think of this new product? Tell us in the comments section.
