Apple has just rolled out iOS 18, the latest version of its mobile operating system, to all its users. During its official presentation, the Cupertino-based company highlighted a flagship feature: Apple Intelligence. However, as users update their iPhones, a surprise awaits them: the much-hyped AI is nowhere to be found. If you were expecting it, you’ll need to be patient.
What is Apple Intelligence ? ✨
Apple Intelligence is the company’s next big advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) for Apple. Compatible with iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series, this AI toolkit includes improvements to Siri, new image editing features, and AI-based assistance tools for communication apps.
However, users won’t be able to access Apple Intelligence until October, when iOS 18.1 is released. This update will mark the beginning of the integration of the first Apple Intelligence features, such as an improved Siri and AI tools for notifications and responses in apps like Messages and Mail. Other features will follow with iOS 18.2, iOS 18.3, and iOS 18.4, scheduled for release by March 2025.
A First Wave of Features with iOS 18.1 📝
The first major update, iOS 18.1, will offer a revamped Siri. The virtual assistant will gain accuracy in understanding follow-up queries. It will also be able to process contextual information more smoothly. One of the major new features is an intelligent response suggestion system in Mail and Messages, allowing for faster interactions with these apps. Siri will also be able to handle call transcription and remove objects from photo backgrounds via the Clean Up tool, inspired by Android’s erasing technology.
Image Generation with iOS 18.2 and 18.3 🖌️
In December, with iOS 18.2, Apple will introduce Image Playground, an AI image generator. Users will be able to create visuals simply by giving a description to Siri, which will generate the image. This feature is reminiscent of tools like DALL-E or MidJourney, now integrated into the Apple ecosystem.
Another awaited feature is Genmojis, personalized emojis that can be created directly from the Messages keyboard. By using photos of people from your library, you can generate unique emojis and share them. Apple hopes Genmojis will go viral, especially during the holiday season.
As for iOS 18.3, changes are expected to be more minor, according to MacRumors. No significant new Apple Intelligence features are anticipated, as this version will mainly focus on stabilizing and optimizing the existing AI.
The Future of Siri with iOS 18.4 🧠
iOS 18.4, scheduled for spring 2025, will bring a revolution in Siri usage. The voice assistant will become more personal, capable of interpreting very specific requests, such as: « What time does my mother’s train arrive? » Siri will then search for the information based on context, thus facilitating interaction with your iPhone. Additionally, new languages, including French, will be gradually integrated into Apple’s AI features starting March 2025. And to mark this major evolution, Siri will also get a new design.
Apple is betting big on its AI integration in its products, and the iPhone 16 seems to be the cornerstone of this strategy. Although users will have to wait until October (or even 2025 for some features), AI-based tools promise to transform the way Apple devices are used.
