Xiaomi 17 takes aim at Apple with dual screens and monster batteries 📱

Every year, it feels like we’ve seen it all in the smartphone world… and then one brand shows up ready to shake things up again. This time, it’s Xiaomi, coming straight for the high-end market—and Apple—with the brand-new Xiaomi 17 lineup. With dual screens, giant batteries, and sharp-edged design, the real question isn’t who’s copying whom anymore, but who’s daring enough to actually innovate.

Xiaomi 17: the compact reimagined 📱

The standard Xiaomi 17 takes a back-to-basics approach with a compact design: a flat 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display, 1.5K resolution, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and up to 3,500 nits peak brightness. It clearly borrows from Apple’s design language, but Xiaomi has put its own spin on ergonomics and handling, making it one of the most compelling compact flagships around.

The real standout, though, is battery life. Xiaomi has packed in a 7,000mAh cell—nearly double the industry standard. Add in a triple 50MP Leica camera system and Qualcomm’s brand-new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip (built on a 3nm process), and the Xiaomi 17 is designed to run demanding games or video streams for hours without breaking a sweat.

Xiaomi 17 Pro: versatility meets originality 🔄

The 17 Pro builds on the base model but adds something you won’t find on an iPhone: a “Magic Back Screen.” This 2.7-inch AMOLED display on the rear isn’t just a gimmick—it doubles as a selfie viewfinder using the main camera system, and can also show widgets, notifications, AI wallpapers, and even a virtual pet. Xiaomi is also touting fun extras like QR codes, sticky notes, music controls, and retro gaming via a custom case.

The idea is to offload interactions from the main display, giving users more flexibility while carving out a distinct identity from Apple’s ecosystem. Under the hood, it’s the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 7,000mAh battery, promising massive endurance no matter how you use it.

Xiaomi 17 Pro Max: pushing every limit 🦾

If the Pro was Xiaomi testing boundaries, the Pro Max is where it goes all in. The phone features a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 2K resolution, 3,500 nits brightness, and new Shield Glass 3.0 protection. The rear screen gets even bigger at 2.9 inches, now supporting AI backgrounds, notifications, and landscape retro gaming.

On the camera side, the Pro Max debuts Leica’s new Light Hunter 950L sensor for better dynamic range and 3D-like depth. A new 5x telephoto lens also gets a larger aperture for sharper zoom shots, especially in low light.

Then there’s the battery: 7,500mAh with 100W fast charging, plus up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Xiaomi has made some controversial calls—like shrinking the ultrawide to 17mm—but the trade-off is better image quality and light handling overall.

Performance, pricing, and availability 💲

All Xiaomi 17 models run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, promising a 32% single-core boost and 17% multi-core bump over the previous generation, while being more power efficient. The phones run HyperOS 3.0, with upgraded AI photo modes and improved thermal management.

Pricing starts around €630 (~$670) for the Xiaomi 17 and about €880 (~$940) for the Pro Max. Preorders are already live in China, with international rollout confirmed for this fall.

Provocation or a new benchmark? 🤔

By explicitly going head-to-head with Apple—and daring to put a second screen on the back—Xiaomi is playing a bold game of provocation and innovation. Whether you see it as “copying, but better” or genuine disruption, the Xiaomi 17 series feels like the most ambitious push yet from the company.

And beyond the marketing one-upmanship, these are serious devices: monster batteries, camera upgrades, and fresh ideas for user interaction. Game-changer or gimmick? Only everyday use will tell.

What’s your take: is Xiaomi’s dual-screen bet a clever trick or the start of something bigger?
