Google AI Plus goes free for students across Africa, Cameroon included 🎓🤖

Google is giving eligible university and college students in 27 African countries — including Cameroon — a full year of Google AI Plus at no cost. The offer includes access to Gemini Omni, expanded usage limits, and 400GB of cloud storage. Alongside it, Google is rolling out a new set of study tools inside Gemini, built to support students through coursework, revision, and research.

Helping African students get ahead 🌍

University life rarely comes one task at a time. Classes, assignments, projects, exams, and research often pile up at once, and that’s exactly where digital tools and AI can make a real difference in how students stay organized and learn. That’s the logic behind Google’s decision to roll out its student offer across 27 African countries, as long as you activate it before December 31, 2026. Once eligible, students get a full year of Google AI Plus, free of charge.

The plan unlocks Gemini Omni, along with usage limits twice as high as the standard Gemini tier. It also comes with 400GB of cloud storage split across Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail, plus a handful of other features aimed at university life specifically.

On top of that, Google is offering a discounted bundle combining Google AI and YouTube Premium. If you’d rather study with music or ad-free video in the background, that bundle can save you up to 70%.

Who’s eligible, and how do you sign up? 🎓

To qualify, you need to be at least 18 and enrolled in higher education. You’ll need a personal Google account, and your student status has to be verified through SheerID, the third-party service Google uses for this check. Depending on your situation, you may be asked for a university email address or a document proving your enrollment.

Once your status is confirmed, you can activate the offer from Google’s dedicated student page. You’ll be asked for a payment method at that stage — but you won’t be charged during the 12 free months.

The free period starts the day you activate it, so anyone who signs up before the December 31, 2026 deadline still gets the full year. One thing worth watching closely: once the 12 months are up, the subscription can automatically roll over into a paid plan at the going rate unless you cancel first. Google says it will notify you before that happens.

A dedicated student hub for every study tool 📚

Gemini now has a hub built specifically for students, pulling all its learning tools into one place so you don’t have to hunt around for them.

Inside, you can build revision notebooks, put together study cards, generate practice quizzes, and organize your course materials. As Google rolls out new education features, they’ll land here too — giving you one place to find every learning tool you need, from tracking assignment deadlines to prepping for exams.

Study notebooks for personalized revision 📝

Google also offers study notebooks, launched back in June, designed to help you structure your learning around your own course material. Once you upload your notes, readings, or other resources, Gemini builds a notebook around a study plan. From there, you can take a diagnostic quiz to spot the gaps in your knowledge.

Based on that, Gemini generates short, personalized lessons and quizzes, with a dashboard that tracks your progress in real time. It’s built for the reality of juggling multiple subjects — lecture notes, readings, assignments, and exam prep all at once.

In the coming weeks, study notebooks are expected to bring in more charts and images directly within lessons. With your permission, Gemini will also be able to add key dates — exams, deadlines — straight to Google Calendar, pulled from your syllabus. Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro subscribers will also get more notebooks and be able to draw on a larger number of sources.

Interactive visualizations that bring concepts to life 🔬

Learning isn’t only about reading. For students who think visually, Gemini also offers interactive visualizations that turn complex ideas into something you can actually explore — including functional 3D simulations. Ask about a topic that lends itself to a visual, and Gemini can turn the answer into an interactive experience.

Want to understand how DNA works? You can explore a 3D structure and zoom into its different parts. The same goes for economic data, which you can dig into through an interactive table.

These tools apply across science, engineering, economics, medicine, and tech-related fields — the goal being to make complex material easier to grasp through visuals you can actually interact with.

Gemini Live, for hands-free studying 🎧

Then there’s Gemini Live, which lets you talk through your work with Gemini in a natural, conversational way — useful when you’re commuting, or just don’t want to be glued to a screen.

You can talk through exercises or documents saved in your Drive, and Gemini Live now includes Deep Research too. Ask Gemini to look into a topic, and it will put together a detailed report — you can close the conversation, lock your screen, or move on to something else while it works in the background.

You’ll get a notification once the report is ready. From there, you can pick the conversation back up, ask follow-up questions, or dig deeper into the findings. It’s built for exactly the kind of in-between moments university life is full of — between classes, labs, and everything else.
