The number of software updates available for a smartphone has always been one of the weaknesses of the Android ecosystem. But things are changing. After Oppo, OnePlus and Samsung, it’s Xiaomi’s turn to offer four years of major updates on their high-end smartphones.
Major updates: one of Android’s weaknesses 🙁
Every year, Apple and Google release a new version of their smartphone operating systems. This year, iOS will have its 17th version, and Android its 14th. When you buy a smartphone, it usually comes with the version of the system available at the time of release. For example, if you buy a Galaxy S23, it will come with Android 13, while an iPhone 14 will come with iOS 16.
Over the years, these smartphones receive new versions of their operating systems, which you can download and install. However, iPhones and Android smartphones are not in the same league. While an iPhone can receive updates up to 6 years after its release, the average for Android is more like 2 years. But things are gradually changing. Samsung, for example, announced that it would provide 4 years of major updates and 5 years of security updates for all its smartphones. Oppo and OnePlus followed suit, offering the same level of updates for their high-end devices.
You’ll be able to use your Xiaomi smartphone for longer⏳
Today, it’s Xiaomi’s turn to enter the dance, as announced by Daniel Desjarlais, Xiaomi’s Communications Director on X.
We are proud to announce a significant enhancement to our commitment to providing exceptional software support. Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro will include 4 generations of Android OS upgrades, as well as 5 years of security patches.
In practice, when the Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro become available, they will be delivered with Android 14. After that, they will be able to receive Android 15, 16, 17 and 18. This is great news for Xiaomi users, who will be able to use their smartphones for even longer. With this announcement, Xiaomi is doing better than Android owner Google, which only provides 3 years of updates. Let’s hope this trend spreads to all Android manufacturers.
