Millions of smartphones are stolen every year, and thieves always find ways to exploit these devices. But Google is taking action with a security update that could change the game. Announced last May, these new protections are gradually rolling out, making smartphone theft far less appealing. Here’s how they work.
Three new weapons against smartphone theft 🛡️
Google introduces three key features to make Android phones safer and harder to exploit if stolen. Here’s how they work:
✔️Smart lock in case of theft
Your smartphone can now detect snatching thanks to its motion sensors. If a sudden movement is detected, the screen immediately locks, preventing quick access to your data.
✔️Offline lock
Thieves often disable Wi-Fi and mobile networks to prevent device tracking. With this update, if your phone stays offline for too long, it automatically locks, limiting the chances of a reset.
✔️Simplified remote lock
Previously, you had to go through a Google account to remotely lock your phone. Now, a simple SMS to your number will activate the lock, a much quicker and more accessible option.
How to activate these protections? 📱
These new features are available on all Android smartphones from version 10. To activate them :
- Open your phone’s Settings
- Go to the Google section
- Go to Device Security
- Enable Theft Protection
By default, these options are disabled, so take the time to configure them to benefit from this enhanced security.
With these updates, Android takes a significant step in protection against theft. Google is pushing its ecosystem to become more resilient against threats, and this is just the beginning. So, if you haven’t done it yet, activate these protections and make thieves’ lives a little harder!
