Motorola and clamshell smartphones have a long love affair. In the 2000s, the brand, now owned by Lenovo, released the iconic Razr V3. In 2019, the brand did it again with a smartphone featuring a foldable screen. This week, it presents two new iterations that have many arguments to seduce: the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra.
Razr 40 Ultra: A large external display to shake up the category
The Razr 40 Ultra takes the clamshell format of the past, modernized with a foldable internal screen. This new foldable smartphone format, dubbed « Flip », has been popularized by Samsung and its Galaxy Z Flip range. While this format is becoming increasingly popular, one criticism keeps cropping up year after year: the small size of the external screen. Motorola has listened to the critics and completely redesigned its external screen, which now covers almost the entire upper external surface of the smartphone.
With a diagonal of 3.6 inches, this large external screen lets you use your favorite applications, such as Google Maps or the camera, without having to open the smartphone. You can even reply to messages via a small keyboard. As with the Galaxy Z Flip, the hinge is flexible enough to adapt to a variety of uses.
When open, the Razr 40 Ultra offers a large, handsome 6.9-inch OLED FHD+ display, with a refresh rate of 165 Hz. As for the rest of the spec sheet, the Razr 40 Ultra features a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 chip (high-end 2022) backed by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The battery has a capacity of 3800 mAh. We’ll have to wait for the first tests to find out more about actual autonomy. As for photography, you can count on a 12 MP wide-angle sensor and a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. The selfie camera boasts 32 MP.
The Razr 40 Ultra is now available for 1199 euros, in 3 colors: Vive Magenta, Infinite Black and Glacier Blue.
Razr 40: the foldable smartphone under the 1,000 euro mark
Motorola has also unveiled a non-« Ultra » version of its new foldable smartphone. With a smaller external screen, the Razr 40 is closer to what is currently available on the foldable smartphone market in clamshell format. This screen is not as versatile as that of its predecessor, and is content to display notifications, the weather and so on. This is one of the concessions that has enabled Motorola to offer the first foldable smartphone in clamshell format costing less than €1,000.
Other concessions have been made on this smartphone: it is equipped with a mid-range chip, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and its screen has a refresh rate of « only » 144 Hz. In terms of photography, it boasts a 64 MP wide-angle sensor, a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 32 MP selfie camera. For the rest, it offers the same functionalities as its elder brother.
With its strong resemblance to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and its reduced price of €899, it could spring a surprise this year when it’s released later this summer.
