If you struggled to access X on Monday, March 10, you weren’t alone. Elon Musk’s platform experienced a massive outage, leaving millions of users unable to post, refresh their feeds, or even open the app. Even Grok, X’s AI, was knocked offline.

Musk Points the Finger at Ukraine 🇺🇦

Reports on DownDetector skyrocketed from 10 AM onwards. While the situation was mostly resolved by late evening, some features remained unstable. So, what happened? Elon Musk has a firm opinion on the matter.

Elon Musk quickly attributed the outage to an unprecedented cyberattack. According to him, X faces attacks « every day, » but this one was on another level. He claims that IP addresses located in Ukraine were involved, hinting at a state-sponsored assault.

His statements quickly took a political turn, especially in an interview with Fox News, where he suggested that a « large coordinated group » could be behind the attack. However, not all experts agree with his assessment.

A Russian Hacker Group Claims Responsibility 💀

Meanwhile, Dark Storm Team, a pro-Russian hacktivist group, claimed responsibility for the attack on Telegram. The group is known for targeting entities supporting Israel and for its efforts to weaken certain Western infrastructures.

However, claiming responsibility doesn’t necessarily mean they were behind it. Some experts, like Clément Domingo, suggest Dark Storm might simply be leveraging the event for publicity. Cybersecurity specialist Eric Noonan urges caution: « Any statement made during or immediately after an attack should be taken with a grain of salt. »

Musk: A Growing Target 📈

This attack comes at a tense time for Musk. His controversial stances have earned him the hostility of various cybercriminal groups, including Anonymous. Just last month, hacktivists criticized Musk for having « too much power with too little accountability » and pointed to his close ties with Donald Trump.

During Trump’s presidency, Musk led the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), an agency tasked with cutting government spending. However, its drastic budget reductions have fueled tensions, potentially adding to Musk’s list of enemies.

Who Is Really Behind the Attack? 🤔

So, was it Ukraine, Russia, or just opportunistic cybercriminals? For now, the truth remains unclear. What is certain is that X remains a prime target for those looking to challenge Musk, his vision of the internet, and his political influence.

The investigation is ongoing, but this event highlights how modern conflicts are no longer fought solely on the battlefield—they’re also waged in cyberspace.
