Small enough to fit in a handbag, a pocket, or the palm of a hand, pocket fans are quietly taking over Cameroon. Rechargeable, silent, and increasingly cheap, they’re flying off shelves in markets, accessory shops, pharmacies and online stores alike. Between relentless heat, long power cuts, and packed daily commutes, this small device has become far more than a gadget — it’s turning into a genuine daily essential, especially in Douala and the northern regions.

An accessory that’s become impossible to ignore 🌬️

A few years ago, the pocket fan was still something of a curiosity — usually brought back from abroad or spotted in a social media video. Not anymore. On the streets of Douala, in university hallways in Yaoundé, in hospital waiting rooms or government offices, more and more people reach for their own fan the moment the heat gets unbearable.

« When I’m at an event, I can’t do without my fan. The more people around, the hotter it gets, and this little companion — way more useful than a hand fan — is a real lifesaver, » says Clara, a regular user.

Vendors confirm the shift. Sales spike during heatwaves, but also around ceremonies, public gatherings, and long rides on public transport. For many buyers, the appliance offers a simple fix to a discomfort that’s become part of everyday life.

The heat is driving people to buy in ☀️

Intense heat is a regular feature of life in Cameroon, with temperatures in several cities capable of climbing past 35°C. Poorly ventilated offices, crowded taxis, and packed public spaces make for tough days. Faced with that reality, more and more consumers are looking for individual solutions.

In Douala, Mireille, who works for a private company, doesn’t hide her relief. « I sometimes spend over an hour stuck in traffic. I used to arrive at the office completely drained. Since I got a pocket fan, it’s not a miracle cure, but it genuinely makes a difference, » she says.

Arnaud, a student, tells a similar story. « When the power goes out during exam prep, I just plug my fan into a power bank. It lets me keep working without suffocating. »

For many young people, the fan has become as essential as a phone charger.

Social media is speeding things up 📱

Social media has played a major role in the pocket fan’s rise. On TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, influencers regularly post videos reviewing different models, comparing battery life, and showing them in action on public transport, at the market, or at the office. Videos racking up thousands of views make people want to try the product themselves, and sellers lean into that visibility with live demos on their own pages.

« A lot of people message me after seeing a TikTok video. They thought it was a useless gadget. Once they try it, they often come back to buy a second one for someone else. It’s practical, and it really helps, » says Vanessa, an online seller.

According to her, most customers first discover the product through social media — digital word of mouth plays a real role in how popular these devices have become.

A market in full expansion 📈

Pocket fans now come in a wide range of models. Some offer multiple speed settings, others pack a long-lasting battery, a desk stand, or even a misting function. Prices reportedly range from about 2,000 to 15,000 FCFA, depending on battery capacity, build quality, and features.

For sellers, that variety reflects growing demand. « It used to be that only a few people asked for this product. Now it’s one of the accessories we restock the fastest, » says one electronics vendor at Douala’s Mboppi market.

That demand is also fueling a wave of online sellers importing the devices directly to stock their virtual shops.

Comfort has its limits ⚖️

Users appreciate the convenience, but they’re clear-eyed about the downsides too. Battery life varies widely by model, and cheaper units sometimes run out fast or feel poorly built. Some buyers also point to how hard it is to find replacement parts once a battery fails.

« The first one I bought broke down after a few weeks. Now I’d rather spend a bit more on something sturdier, » says Ibrahim, still a little disappointed by the experience.

Those complaints haven’t slowed the market down, though. Beyond its practical appeal, the pocket fan reflects a broader shift in how Cameroonian consumers behave: small, rechargeable devices are gaining ground as people look for gear that’s portable, energy-efficient, and built for an increasingly mobile lifestyle. E-commerce is riding the same wave — a growing share of purchases now happen directly through WhatsApp, Facebook, or TikTok, where sellers show off products on video before arranging home delivery.

The pocket fan has effectively joined a new generation of everyday tech accessories, alongside power banks, mini printers, and wireless earbuds.

A small gadget, a bigger story 💡

The pocket fan’s success goes beyond a passing trend. It says something about how Cameroonians adapt their habits to the realities of daily life. This small device has become a symbol of pragmatic consumption, where every purchase has to answer a concrete need.

Zoom out, and there’s a bigger story here too: some of the most telling innovations aren’t the most sophisticated ones — they’re the most useful. In a context where comfort itself is a daily challenge, Cameroonians aren’t just chasing gadgets anymore. They’re chasing solutions. And sometimes, all it takes is a fan that fits in one hand to see just how much habits, expectations, and everyday life are shifting.
