Network security, coverage on the table for Cameroon’s telecom regulator 📡🇨🇲

Network quality, security, and nationwide coverage are top of mind for Cameroon’s telecom regulator. On September 10, 2026, Philémon Zoo Zame, Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART), sat down with MTN Cameroon’s Wanda Matandela and Orange Cameroun’s Patrick Benon — the country heads of the two dominant mobile operators — for a working session on the state of the country’s networks.

Service quality takes center stage 📶

Joined by their respective teams, ART and the two operators covered a range of issues tied to how Cameroon’s electronic communications networks function and where they’re headed.

The meeting is part of ART’s regular dialogue with major players in the sector. Discussion centered on quality of service (QoS), user experience, network security, and equitable access to telecom services nationwide.

Participants reviewed the service quality currently delivered by MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroun. Several fixes, already underway or on the table, were examined with an eye toward durably improving network performance — and, by extension, the experience of everyday subscribers.

Network security and subscriber identification 🔐

Network infrastructure security also featured prominently in the talks. Participants reviewed the state of ongoing consultations with certain government services on telecom network security and subscriber identification. On these points, public authorities, ART, and the operators intend to keep working together toward coordinated, effective responses to the challenges facing the country’s networks.

Territorial coverage was also on the agenda. ART’s Director General reaffirmed the importance of extending network coverage to areas that remain underserved — work that must stay within the bounds of current regulation. The goal, notably, is to narrow the digital divide and ensure that every citizen, regardless of where they live, can access electronic communications services on equal footing.

A dialogue between regulator and operators set to continue 🤝

The session reflects the authorities’ intent to keep a regular, constructive dialogue going with the country’s main telecom players. Through this ongoing engagement, ART plans to keep pushing operators on network performance, security, and coverage — a process meant to support the evolution of Cameroon’s electronic communications sector and, more broadly, the country’s digital transformation.
