During the Forum of Regulatory Institutions of Cameroon (FIRC), held on January 21 and 22, 2025, in Yaoundé, public sector regulators highlighted the importance of AI in modernizing their activities. Under the theme « Artificial intelligence at the service of public service regulators », the event brought together renowned experts.
Powerful analysis and forecasting tools 🔍
First, participants emphasized that AI offers innovative solutions to improve public regulation. Thanks to its analytical and simulation capabilities, it facilitates anomaly detection, risk anticipation, and market dynamics modeling. For example, technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) help quickly identify suspicious clauses.
Additionally, in the telecommunications sector, AI plays a crucial role. It protects consumers against online scams and fake news. Anti-spam systems are increasingly strengthened. According to Dr. Thomas Messi Nguele, an AI analyst, artificial intelligence also helps operators enhance their services through data analysis algorithms, such as clustering.
Optimized transport and energy 🚗⚡
Moreover, AI is also making its way into transport and energy. Specialist Norbert Tsopze explains that it helps streamline traffic through smart sensors. Furthermore, it detects toll fraud and helps prevent accidents. In the energy sector, AI enables predictive maintenance of networks, thanks to digital twins that simulate the behavior of critical equipment. Additionally, it plays a role in water management and infrastructure cybersecurity.
In the financial sector, artificial intelligence is used to detect irregularities in transactions and combat money laundering. As a result, it strengthens sector regulation while ensuring greater security for operations.
The role of the FIRC in public governance 🏛️
Finally, the FIRC brings together several regulators, such as the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART), the Electricity Sector Regulatory Agency (ARSEL), and the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA). By integrating AI-based solutions, these institutions aim to modernize their processes, optimize their efficiency, and better meet citizens’ needs.
Thus, this shift towards AI represents a major step forward for Cameroon. Key sectors are committed to leveraging technology to provide more efficient public services adapted to modern challenges.
