Samsung gradually phases out its messaging app in favor of Google Messages 💬

Samsung continues its transition to making Google Messages the default messaging app on its Galaxy smartphones. Initially announced for new models like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6, this strategy is now being extended to older devices.

A transition that no longer only affects recent models 🔄️

The first changes were seen with the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 in the U.S., where Samsung Messages was no longer pre-installed. Now, this transition is also affecting older models. According to user reports on platforms like Reddit and Threads, smartphones such as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, S21 Ultra, and S22 Plus are receiving notifications to switch to Google Messages. This shift shows that Samsung is committed to making Google Messages the default messaging app across its entire lineup, including older models.

Although Samsung Messages is still available for download on the Galaxy Store, the app is increasingly seen as being on its way out. This change is part of a broader strategy to standardize the user experience on Android by adopting a common messaging platform.

RCS at the heart of Samsung’s decision 💬

Samsung’s choice is primarily driven by a desire to accelerate the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services). RCS is a modern messaging protocol designed to replace traditional SMS, offering features like sharing large files, advanced group chats, and encrypted messages. However, Samsung Messages only supports RCS if the mobile carrier allows it. In contrast, Google Messages does not have this limitation.

By directly integrating Google Messages into its devices, Samsung makes these features more accessible to all users, regardless of their carrier. This decision reflects the company’s commitment to providing a more unified and modern messaging experience while aligning with the standards promoted by Google.

While some users may regret this change, Samsung still offers the option to download Samsung Messages via the Galaxy Store. However, the direction is clear: Google Messages is becoming the norm on Galaxy devices.
