On April 8, Camtel’s Director General, Judith Yah Sunday, welcomed a high-level delegation led by Kyle Whitehill, CEO of satellite internet provider Avanti Communications, in the presence of the British High Commissioner to Cameroon.
A high-level meeting to accelerate connectivity 📡
This meeting is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure. Its goal is to explore concrete solutions to improve network coverage, with a particular focus on areas where connectivity remains unstable, limited, or completely unavailable.
In this context, Avanti Communications is being called upon to take on a major challenge: actively contributing to the country’s digital development.
Satellite as a lever to unlock rural areas 🌍
This hybrid approach, combining fiber optics and satellite technology, could significantly reduce the digital divide between urban and rural areas. It is expected to foster digital inclusion while supporting local economic development.
As part of its modernization and expansion strategy, Camtel now plans to rely on satellite technology to strengthen and complement its already expanding fiber optic network.
The objective is clear: deliver reliable, stable, and accessible connectivity in remote areas that are often difficult to reach through traditional infrastructure. It will also help provide Cameroonian populations with high-speed internet access, regardless of geographical and logistical constraints.
Avanti Communications: a key player in sub-Saharan Africa 🌐
Avanti Communications has established itself as a major player in high-speed satellite connectivity across sub-Saharan Africa. The company has strengthened its presence through multiple strategic partnerships, with a strong focus on rural areas that are often underserved in terms of internet access.
Already operating in several African countries—including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and South Sudan—the company continues to expand its footprint.
It aims to deploy 10,000 sites over the next five years, a target that reflects its ambition to sustainably transform Africa’s digital landscape.
A growing African footprint 📊
According to consistent sources, nearly 20% of Avanti Communications’ workforce is based in Africa. Leading countries include Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Angola, and Benin, illustrating the company’s deepening roots on the continent.
The company’s revenue in Africa is estimated at around $800 million, equivalent to approximately 448.56 billion CFA francs. This figure highlights the strategic importance of the African market in its overall growth.
This partnership between Camtel and Avanti Communications could mark a turning point in internet access in Cameroon. Rural areas, long left behind in the digital revolution, could finally gain greater connectivity and new opportunities.
