Liberia has taken a major step toward modernizing its education system with the launch of a nationwide EdTech training program for teachers. The initiative, led by RESPECT in partnership with the Ministry of Education, aims to help educators integrate digital tools into their classrooms in a way that is practical, responsible, and aligned with local realities.
A nationwide effort across all 15 counties 🏫
Through this program, Liberia hopes to improve the overall quality of education while preparing schools for an increasingly connected world. Teachers are placed at the center of this transformation, recognized as the key drivers of meaningful and lasting change in the education system.
The official launch brought together education leaders and teachers from all 15 counties of the country. This broad participation highlights a clear ambition: EdTech is not meant to benefit only urban schools, but also rural and remote areas that often face significant challenges in terms of access, infrastructure, and equipment.
RESPECT also praised the strong involvement of national education authorities. The initiative notably expressed its appreciation to Liberia’s Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso M., for his leadership and commitment to innovation and the strengthening of pedagogical skills across the country.
Teaching better with technology 💻
Unlike many overly theoretical training programs, RESPECT focuses on hands-on, classroom-ready skills. The training is built around three core pillars:
- developing basic to intermediate digital skills that teachers can immediately apply in class;
- building pedagogical confidence, so educators can use technology without fear or hesitation;
- promoting tools that are adapted to local contexts, avoiding “imported” solutions that are difficult to implement on the ground.
This approach is designed to help teachers turn technology into a genuine learning tool, rather than a superficial add-on. The program also places strong emphasis on responsible EdTech use, particularly when it comes to guiding students, managing digital content, and framing healthy digital practices in schools.
Teachers at the heart of educational transformation 👩🏾🏫
According to officials at the Ministry of Education, early signs of engagement are already visible. Assistant Minister Nathaniel K. Cisco Jr. highlighted the enthusiasm among teachers, many of whom have expressed readiness to adopt the RESPECT framework to strengthen both teaching and learning outcomes.
Through this initiative, Liberia aims to position teachers as true agents of change, capable of driving sustainable technology adoption within the education system. In the long term, the goal is to improve students’ learning experiences and support the gradual modernization of Liberian schools across the entire country.
