Benin has taken a major technological leap with the launch of 5G by MTN. This innovation promises profound transformations in digital usage for both individuals and businesses.

A historic first for Benin 🚀

On November 22, 2024, MTN Benin launched the country’s first commercial 5G service. This initiative places Benin at the forefront of innovation in West Africa, offering ultra-fast and reliable connectivity.

This launch aligns with a strategy to position Benin among the regional leaders in digital technology. With unprecedented speeds, 5G is set to revolutionize how people and businesses interact, accelerating exchanges and facilitating the adoption of new technologies.

Over 25 years of operations in Benin, MTN has introduced major advancements in telecommunications, including SMS services in the early 2000s and 3G and 4G in 2012 and 2015, respectively. According to the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Post (ARCEP), MTN had 8.4 million active mobile subscriptions in the second quarter of 2024, representing about 50% of the market share. Additionally, the company boasts 6.1 million active mobile internet subscriptions out of a total of 11 million.

A technology with multiple benefits 🌐

The benefits of 5G go beyond faster speeds. It opens up a world of endless possibilities:

  • For individuals: Enhanced user experiences with seamless access to streaming videos, online gaming, and social media.
  • For businesses: A chance to adopt advanced digital solutions in areas like online education, e-health, and financial services.

This innovation will also enable startups to develop projects requiring robust connectivity, fostering the growth of the local digital economy.

Driving digital development 🏆

According to MTN Benin’s CEO, this initiative reflects a strategic vision to transform digital usage in the country.

« 5G offers limitless opportunities. It’s a revolution for our users and the nation’s economy, » stated the CEO of MTN Benin.

This initiative reinforces MTN’s role in driving digital transformation in Benin and across Africa. Through its investments, the telecom operator contributes to improving technological infrastructure, which is crucial for global competitiveness.

However, this technological advancement does not come without challenges. Currently, access to compatible devices remains limited and often expensive, potentially restricting 5G usage to an elite minority.

Additionally, expanding network coverage to rural areas will require significant investments to ensure equitable connectivity for all Beninese citizens. MTN has already announced plans to invest further in democratizing this technology by making devices more affordable and strengthening its infrastructure.

Boosting regional technological leadership 📈

By adopting 5G, Benin joins the ranks of pioneering African nations in the race for technological innovation. This launch provides the country with a strategic edge in West Africa and stimulates an innovation ecosystem conducive to the emergence of new digital solutions.

Beyond its immediate benefits, this initiative enhances Benin’s appeal to foreign investors, particularly in the telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and digital economy sectors.
