The news hit Elon Musk’s social network like a bomb last weekend. When opening the application, all users who use the two-factor authentication using SMS got a bad surprise: the feature is now reserved for Twitter Blue users.

Only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use two-factor authentication using SMS

First of all, what is the two-factor authentication? Well, it’s very simple. To log in to a service like Twitter, you usually need a username and a password. Except that someone can steal your password and log into your account. To prevent this, platforms implement an additional verification process, in the form of a temporary code that you can receive via SMS. This is called two-factor authentication.
One of the most popular methods of two-factor authentication is via SMS. According to Twitter, this method has been abused, which is why it has been disabled by default. Twitter, therefore, encourages all its users who want to have additional protection to use a dedicated authentication application.

What to do if you have two-factor Authentication using SMS  enabled ?

Well, the first thing to do is to disable it in the settings. Indeed, if you don’t do it, you will lose access to your account. To do this, it’s very simple, go to « Settings and support » ➡️ « Settings and privacy« . In the menu that appears, click on « Security and account access« , then on « Security« . Once on this page, you will have access to the page « Two-Factor Authentication« , and you will just have to uncheck the « SMS » method.

Then, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, you will have to use a dedicated authentication application. And now you’re wondering what it is. It’s simply an application that generates random and temporary codes, a bit like the ones you receive by SMS. The most popular ones are Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, available on Android and iOS. Once these applications are installed, go to the last menu « Security« , click on « Authentication application » and follow the procedure.

Even if authentication applications are more secure than SMS, it is still unfortunate that a basic security option has to be paid for.
