The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and mobile phone brand TECNO are continuing their commitment to support refugee children. On April 29, 2025, the two partners announced the renewal of their educational partnership across the African continent.

A Strengthened Three-Year Partnership ✍️

This new phase of the collaboration will span three years, aiming to provide access to quality education for over 54,000 refugee children. In addition, 15 students will benefit from the DAFI scholarship program, which supports refugees in pursuing higher education.

Since the partnership began in 2020, more than 24,000 children have gained access to improved school infrastructure, and 40 students have received DAFI scholarships to pursue university studies.

Responding to the Educational Emergency in East Africa 🌍

Efforts are focused on regions heavily affected by forced displacement: East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes region. In 2024, millions were forced to flee violence in Somalia, Sudan, the DRC, and South Africa. The situation was further worsened by devastating natural disasters, including widespread flooding.

In this context, the joint project falls under UNHCR’s Primary Impact and DAFI initiatives, with the goal of enabling refugee youth to continue their education despite adversity.

Gradual Implementation Starting in 2025 ⏳

In the program’s first year, at least 18,000 refugee children will receive educational support. Five new students will also be granted scholarships to pursue higher education through the DAFI program.

For both UNHCR and TECNO, education is seen as a vital foundation. It helps displaced youth rebuild their lives and empowers them to contribute to the development of their host communities.

Private Sector Commitment Highlighted 🤝

Sophie Muller, UNHCR Representative in China, praised TECNO’s involvement, stating that partnerships with the private sector can transform humanitarian responses and expand their reach on the ground.

Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to education: « Every refugee child or youth we support represents a possible future for Africa. »

This partnership demonstrates that by combining expertise, resources, and shared determination, it is possible to bring concrete and lasting solutions to thousands of children in crisis.
