Kenya’s phase II digital literacy rollout reaches Nairobi, with 91 of 98 schools set up 💻🇰🇪

Kenya is pushing ahead with the digital overhaul of its education system. On 15 September, the government launched the Nairobi County rollout of phase II of its Digital Literacy Programme (DLP), delivering new equipment to public schools.

Digital equipment for 10,382 schools 🏫💻

Run by the ICT Authority, the government agency behind the effort, under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), this second phase will give teachers laptops and install interactive boards in 10,382 public junior schools (Kenya’s lower secondary level) across the country’s 47 counties. In Nairobi, the launch took place at Lenana Primary School.

In Nairobi County, equipment has already been delivered to all 98 targeted schools. Installation, inspection and acceptance are complete in 91 of them, a completion rate of 92.9% for the county’s planned rollout. The Nairobi leg is one step in a national programme meant to bring digital tools into these schools gradually.

But the programme isn’t only about hardware. The rollout comes with training meant to build teachers’ digital skills and encourage effective use of technology in the classroom.

The idea is that teachers will get more out of the laptops and interactive boards in their lessons. The aim is also to strengthen digital learning and prepare pupils for the skills needed in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
