The country has finalized the design of its very first 100% nationally developed microchip. This project, led by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, was announced by Minister Kamel Baddari in a statement released on April 14, highlighting the local expertise mobilized to bring it to life.
Production launch planned in Taiwan 🌐
The development was carried out by teams of Algerian engineers, with support from the National Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies. The chip, measuring just one millimeter, represents a significant breakthrough in Algeria’s electronic technology sector.
Although designed locally, the first production phase will be handled by partners in Taiwan, as Algeria does not yet possess the necessary industrial infrastructure.
However, the country plans to launch domestic production within the next two years. This timeframe will allow for the construction of local facilities and the training of essential skills for autonomous manufacturing.
Creation of a national production unit 🏭
The government has entrusted the future local manufacturing to the National Electronics Industry Company, which is responsible for establishing a dedicated production unit. This entity will be tasked with large-scale component manufacturing in accordance with international standards.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop Algeria’s electronics industry. In the long run, it aims to reduce the country’s reliance on importing advanced technologies.
Strengthening local technological capabilities ⚙️
The microchip project is accompanied by several partnerships with both Algerian and international companies. These collaborations are designed to support the establishment of a comprehensive technological ecosystem, from design to production.
Among the signed agreements is a partnership with a transaction management company. This collaboration will help enhance the security of electronic payments and protect critical systems, while also promoting the emergence of a secure digital environment.
The development of this chip marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s push for technological sovereignty. By relying on internal expertise, the country aims to position itself in the global race for cutting-edge technologies.
This project also strengthens the state’s ambitions for a knowledge-based economy. It seeks to create local added value, support scientific research, and place innovation at the heart of national growth.
