Launched in 2016 as a lighter alternative to Messenger, aimed at less powerful smartphones, the Messenger Lite app will soon be closing its doors. Users have less than a month to bid farewell.
You’ll have to use Facebook Lite or « classic » Messenger
Messenger Lite was designed to take up as little storage space as possible and minimize the use of the phone’s processor resources. Given the diversity of Android smartphones, from entry-level to high-end models, the application has been a notable success, accumulating over 760 million users worldwide since its launch. The leading countries were India, Brazil and Indonesia.
After almost 5 years of service, the application will be retired by Meta.
“Starting August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email.
Existing users of the application have therefore been invited to turn to the « classic » version of Messenger or Facebook Lite, to continue exchanging messages with their various Facebook contacts. To prevent new users from using the application, it has been removed from the Google Play Store. As for the App Store, since the application was never a success on iOS, it has not appeared there since 2020.
