If you’ve been using TapTap Send to wire money to Cameroon, you might have noticed something’s off since January 5th. The popular money transfer app—known for its speed and low fees—is currently experiencing technical difficulties that specifically affect transfers to Orange Money accounts in Cameroon. The good news? The service is still running, just with some temporary limitations.

A targeted outage disrupting transfers 🔴

Since the start of the year, TapTap Send users attempting to send money to Orange Money accounts in Cameroon have been greeted with a rather frustrating message: « Provider unavailable – We are temporarily unable to process transfers to Orange in Cameroon. »

What’s interesting here is how targeted this issue is. Transfers to MTN Mobile Money are still working fine, and other countries covered by TapTap Send don’t seem affected. We’re looking at a localized technical problem between TapTap Send and its Orange Money Cameroon partner.

For transfers already in progress, the app displays another message: « Your transfer is taking longer than usual due to technical issues with our partner in Cameroon. »

At least the company is being transparent about the situation.

What to do if your transfer is stuck 🛠️

If you’re caught up in this mess, first things first: don’t panic. TapTap Send has a responsive customer support team that can help sort things out. You can contact their support team who handles pending transfer cases.

On their help page, they recommend several steps: verify your recipient’s information is correct, make sure the recipient’s Orange Money account is active and properly registered, and above all, stay patient while their teams work to resolve the issue with Orange.

If you need to send money urgently and can’t wait, the simplest solution is to temporarily switch to MTN Mobile Money, which continues working normally on TapTap Send. Your recipient can then withdraw the money or use it directly from their MTN account.

Alternatives to keep sending money 💸

Fortunately, the money transfer ecosystem to Cameroon is pretty robust. If you absolutely need to make a transfer to Orange Money and TapTap Send isn’t cooperating, you’ve got options.

Sendwave remains a solid alternative, with a similar approach to TapTap Send: low fees and fast transfers. The app lets you send directly to both Orange Money and MTN Mobile Money in Cameroon.

Orange Money Europe is Orange’s official app for international transfers. If you’re in Europe, it’s an interesting option since it guarantees full compatibility with Cameroonian Orange Money accounts. Transfers are typically instant.

For those looking for more economical options, Danapay positions itself with fees of just €1 regardless of the amount sent, while Neero offers a modern interface allowing you to send to Orange Money, MTN, and Wave from a single app.

Traditional players like Western Union and MoneyGram are also available, offering the advantage of an extensive physical network for cash pickups, though typically with higher fees.

So, what’s the takeaway? 🤔

This temporary TapTap Send outage is a reminder of why you shouldn’t rely on a single channel for money transfers, especially when your loved ones depend on it. Even the most reliable services can hit technical snags. The silver lining? Africa’s fintech ecosystem has grown considerably in recent years, offering plenty of viable alternatives.

This kind of incident also raises broader questions about the robustness of mobile payment infrastructure in Africa and the need for better interoperability between operators. But that’s a conversation for another article.
