Google Bard changes its name to Gemini 🤖

Google has no intention of falling behind OpenAI in the AI field. To this end, the Web giant has taken inspiration from its competitor’s strategy: a new name, a new paying offer and new applications.

Bard becomes Gemini, the name of its LLM 🤖

Launched in early 2023, Bard is Google’s alternative to ChatGPT. Like ChatGPT, it is a conversational agent capable of answering your questions in natural language. It also relies on an LLM, just like ChatGPT. If you don’t know what an LLM is, you can read our Ask Griots on the subject by clicking here.

The LLM behind ChatGPT is called GPT, while the one behind Bard is called Gemini. Google has decided to rename Bard after its LLM:

« Bard has been the best way for people to directly experience our most capable models. To reflect the advanced tech at its core, Bard will now simply be called Gemini. »

states Google in its press release

Gemini is now available in 40 languages and 230 countries on the web by clicking here. But that’s not the only news.

An advanced model and a paid version ✨

Google’s conversational agent isn’t just named after its competitor. In fact, just like OpenAI with ChatGPT, the Mountain View company will be launching a paid version.

The free version of ChatGPT is based on GPT 3.5, while the paid version uses GPT4, a more advanced version. Google is adopting exactly the same model with Gemini. The free version will be based on the Gemini Pro 1.0 model, while the paid version, called Gemini Advanced, will be based on the new Gemini Ultra 1.0 model.

With our Ultra 1.0 model, Gemini Advanced is far more capable at highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions and collaborating on creative projects. Gemini Advanced not only allows you to have longer, more detailed conversations; it also better understands the context from your previous prompts.

According to Google, Gemini Advanced can take on the role of your personal mentor. It creates detailed guidelines, sample quizzes and engages in interactive discussions tailored to your learning style. It’s also useful for solving more complex coding scenarios, providing ideas and guiding you through the evaluation of different programming approaches.

For digital creators, Gemini Advanced eases the transition from conception to realization. It generates original content, analyzes recent trends and offers insights into improved strategies for expanding their audience.

For the moment, Gemini Advanced is only available in English and in 150 countries, including Cameroon. You can find the full list here. If your country is on the list, you can subscribe to Google AI Premium for $19.99/month to access it.

New mobile applications 📱

On closer inspection, Google is following exactly the same strategy as OpenAI: name similar to LLM, paid version, mobile applications. Indeed, Gemini will also have its own mobile applications, or almost.

On Android, you can download the Gemini app or use it directly in the Google Assistant app. You’ll also be able to trigger Gemini in the same way as Google Assistant, by pressing the power button, swiping the corner of the screen on some phones or saying « Hey Google ». On iOS, Gemini will be accessible from the Google app, via a button on the home page.

Les applications ne sont actuellement disponibles qu’aux États-Unis. Aucune date de disponibilité pour les autres pays n’a été annoncée pour le moment.
