Last week’s big surprise was the announcement of Apple Intelligence. But even more surprising is the fact that only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are compatible. Many of you are wondering why. We answer them in this week’s #AskGriots.

Hybrid operating mode

Apple’s new generative artificial intelligence assistant, called Apple Intelligence, will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. This restriction is explained by the way the technology works.

Apple Intelligence works in a hybrid way: the A17 Pro chip manages an index of personal data locally and selects the relevant information to transmit to Apple’s servers to generate a personalized response, without ever transmitting all the user’s data.

Lack of local power

The A17 Pro chip (present only on Pro models) is required to have sufficient power to create and maintain the local semantic index containing the user’s personal data. In addition, the semantic index requires a minimum of 8 GB of RAM, a quantity that only the A17 Pro, M1, M2, M3 and M4 chips can provide.

The hardware and technical limitations of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus chips make it impossible to implement the private operation of Apple Intelligence, which explains why it is restricted to Pro models.
