Cameroon’s Bac 2026 has an AI cheating problem 🤖🇨🇲

Since Cameroon’s national high school exam — the Baccalauréat — released its 2026 results, a troubling trend has reportedly been spreading among some candidates: using AI tools to falsify their SMS results from the Cameroon Baccalaureate Office (OBC). The method appears simple. Its consequences aren’t.

A low-tech hack, high-tech tools 📲

The system itself is familiar to every Cameroonian candidate: after grades are released, students text their exam ID number to a short code — 8070 — for around 150 FCFA per attempt. The reply delivers the verdict in one word: Admitted or Failed.

Some failing candidates reportedly took a screenshot of that message and turned to generative AI tools or AI-powered photo editors to swap « Failed » for « Admitted. » An AI trainer we spoke with confirmed just how low the bar is:

A well-crafted prompt, no technical skill required, produces a convincing fake ready to post.

Parents caught by a doctored image 👨‍👩‍👧

The goal, allegedly, is straightforward: convince family and friends of a fake pass — sometimes to justify a university application or entry into a competitive program that requires the diploma. A teacher, interviewed on a television channel, warned that families need to verify results themselves through official channels, since AI-edited screenshots can be nearly impossible to tell apart from the real thing.

When tech exposes the fraud 🔎

Ironically, it was other students’ own digital habits that reportedly blew the story open. While checking official pass lists for their results, several students noticed classmates who’d claimed to be « admitted » weren’t actually on them. Cross-checking allegedly surfaced multiple cases of doctored results, sparking family confrontations and peer call-outs along the way.

The episode reopens a bigger conversation about how African youth are using — and misusing — generative AI, somewhere between technical creativity and ethical grey zones still largely unregulated.

Should generative AI use among young people be more tightly regulated, or is this a matter for families to handle on their own? Tell us in the comments.
