Cameroon may soon host a new piece of infrastructure built specifically for artificial intelligence. Cybastion, a US company, is reportedly planning to invest $75 million — roughly FCFA 45 billion — to build an AI-dedicated data center in Douala, paired with its own power plant. The announcement came on August 28, 2026, from the US Embassy in Cameroon, the day after the first US-Cameroon Economic and Trade Dialogue held in Yaoundé. The project is part of a broader $7 billion package of investment opportunities — roughly FCFA 3,954 billion — discussed as part of that dialogue.

Building capacity for AI workloads 🖥️

The project’s technical relevance lies in what it’s meant to do. An AI-dedicated data center is designed to host and process the large volumes of data these technologies require to run. A 2025 study by Cameroon’s National Center for Computer Development (CENADI) found the country’s infrastructure dominated by Tier 1 and Tier 2 facilities — undersized for the computing loads AI demands. That gap, the study noted, keeps Cameroon dependent on hosting infrastructure abroad for some of its data and services.

The digital sovereignty question 🔐

By setting up in Douala, Cybastion’s project would bring data storage and processing capacity closer to Cameroonian soil. The stakes go well beyond a single building: they touch on the country’s ability to host infrastructure suited to new digital uses, artificial intelligence chief among them. Security is another central piece of the puzzle. According to the CENADI study, none of the national infrastructure it reviewed holds international security certification. Building new capacity could feed directly into ongoing discussions about how to secure Cameroon’s data and digital services.

Power at the center of the plan ⚡

One notable detail: the data center is reportedly expected to be paired with its own power plant. That pairing addresses a well-known obstacle to building computing infrastructure in Cameroon — reliable electricity. Computing facilities need a stable power supply to run continuously, and Cybastion’s stated goal is to bundle computing capacity and power generation into a single project from the start.

A pledge still to become reality 📊

Cybastion already operates in Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger and Côte d’Ivoire, where it is said to be behind a similar project pegged at $170 million, or roughly FCFA 96 billion. In Cameroon, the next steps would involve assessing the business climate and clearing any obstacles to investment. The exact site, timeline and financing structure for the Douala project are still to be worked out. The real test now is turning an announcement into an actual facility — one that could strengthen the country’s technological capacity in a field that has become strategic: artificial intelligence.
