In November 2022, WhatsApp officially began rolling out its Communities feature to bring together people with similar ideas and interests. Over time, WhatsApp has improved this feature and it now looks like a privacy feature will soon be introduced.

When Community Means Confidentiality

In its ongoing efforts to maximise community engagement, WhatsApp recently unveiled an improved interface for the Communities tab. Building on this improvement, the popular messaging platform is introducing a feature that provides protection for members’ phone numbers.
According to a report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has begun implementing a phone number privacy feature for Communities in a recent update available to a select group of beta testers.
With this update, WhatsApp is looking to make joining Communities more ‘anonymous’, if not safer. Previously, when you interacted using reactions to messages, your phone number or the fact that you were the group administrator were revealed. But the good news is that this is about to change!

As you can see in the screenshot above, there’s a new option in the community announcement group information. With the new update, you’ll receive an alert informing you that your phone number will only be visible to community administrators and people who have registered your number.
This means that from now on, when you join a community and interact with community messages, your phone number will simply be hidden. This feature will not only preserve your anonymity, but also reduce the risk of fraud and scams that have become commonplace on the messaging platform owned by Meta.

You will also be protected in the event of a private message

If you wish to contact a member of the community privately, you can send them a request. If the other person accepts, their phone number only will be visible to you. The reverse is also true.
For the time being, this feature is only available to a few lucky beta testers on Android and iOS. However, we expect this feature to be rolled out more widely soon.
