FoodTech in Cameroon: between promises and frustrations of meal delivery 🍽️📞

In recent years, food delivery platforms have been gradually developing in Cameroon. Thanks to specialized apps and services, it is now possible to order a meal in just a few clicks without leaving home. Restaurants and independent services now offer a convenient solution for customers. However, while this evolution appeals to some consumers, it also generates numerous frustrations related to delivery times, high fees, and service reliability.

Uneven services ⏳

The principle is simple: a restaurant offers a delivery service, the customer pays for their meal at the restaurant price, along with additional fees that vary depending on the distance. Despite this progress, the user experience remains mixed. While some deliveries go smoothly, others suffer from delays, order mistakes, or meals arriving cold.

« Once, I ordered a dish that was supposed to arrive in 30 minutes. I waited for over an hour and a half, and when the delivery person finally arrived, the food was almost cold. The worst part is that we still have to pay despite these issues, which are beyond our control, » complains Hervé, a regular user.

The most frequent complaints concern unpredictable delivery times. Some interviewed customers also regret the lack of professionalism among certain delivery personnel and the unavailability of dishes that are still listed on the apps. Despite these shortcomings, it is undeniable that these services make life easier for many people.

« My job keeps me so busy that I forget to eat. By simply searching for a restaurant with a delivery service, I can get food in just one click. Yes, it seems expensive, but we have to admit that it helps us a lot, » says Claude, a civil administrator.

Fees deemed too high 💰

Another major obstacle to the widespread adoption of these services remains the cost. In addition to meal prices, users must pay delivery fees, which vary depending on the distance and platform used.

« Sometimes, the delivery fee is almost as expensive as the meal itself. To make it worthwhile, you need to place a large order. I prefer to go in person when I have time, » laments Marie, a student.

Some platforms try to attract more customers by offering promotions or subscriptions to reduce costs. However, these initiatives remain insufficient to appeal to the majority of consumers with modest incomes. Essentially, one needs enough money to afford food delivery. Some even argue that it is a service for the wealthy.

« We believe they should standardize delivery fees. I can’t order a 2,000 FCFA meal and pay 1,500 FCFA for delivery. I’d rather go myself if I have the time or take advantage of someone else’s order to place mine, » complains Anne, a journalist.

Necessary improvements 🚀

Despite these challenges, the demand for meal delivery continues to grow in Cameroon, driven by the rise of remote work and changing consumption habits. To retain customers, platforms must optimize order management, train their delivery personnel, and ensure reliable delivery times.

In the meantime, while meal delivery is attracting more and more Cameroonians, it remains above all a luxury.
