When Apple unveiled its new M1 chips in November 2020, it shocked the PC world. Their performance combined with low power consumption quickly made them leaders in the personal computer market. Despite this, the Cupertino-based firm has not become complacent – quite the contrary.

Apple further strengthens its lead with new M3 chips 🧠

Since the release of its M1 chip, Apple has continued to consolidate its lead, notably with the M2 chip family. Today, all Macs, from the MacBook Air to the Mac Pro, including the Mac Mini and iMac, are equipped with a chip from the M family. Apple used to introduce its new chips in waves: first the Mx chip, then the Mx Pro chip, and finally the Mx Max chip. For the third generation, you won’t have to wait: the 3 chips M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max have all been presented.

Thanks to a new 3-nanometer manufacturing technology, they consume much less energy. But that’s not all: they’re also much more powerful. It’s important to note that these chips have two « brains ». One is dedicated to simple tasks and the other to more complex ones. In terms of performance :

  • The basic task part of the M3 family is 30% more powerful than the M2 family and 50% more powerful than the M1 family.
  • The complex task part of the M3 family is 15% more powerful than the M2 family and 30% more powerful than the M1 family.
  • The AI part of the M3 family is 15% more powerful than the M2 family and 60% more powerful than the M1 family.

In short, these new processors are very fast. In detail, here are their technical specifications:

  • M3 chip: 8-core CPU (4 performance and 4 power-saving cores), 10-core GPU, up to 24 GB unified memory.
  • M3 Pro chip: 12-core CPU (6 performance and 6 power-saving cores), 18-core GPU, up to 36 GB unified memory.
  • M3 Max chip: 16-core CPU (12 performance and 4 power-saving cores), 40-core GPU, up to 128 GB unified memory.

The brand’s first computers equipped with these new chips were also unveiled.

New MacBook Pros and iMacs 💻

To accompany these new chips, Apple has unveiled new MacBook Pros and iMacs.

For the new MacBook Pros, apart from the new chips, there’s virtually no visual difference. They are still available in 14″ and 16″, and retain the same design introduced in 2021 (which you can discover by clicking here). The all-aluminum body is retained, along with the excellent keyboard without the Touch Bar. We still have a variety of ports, including the HDMI port and the MagSafe connector for charging. The screen is a little brighter. However, Apple has reserved a little surprise for those who choose to equip these MacBooks with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips: they can get an all-black MacBook. These new MacBook Pros will be available from November 07 at the following prices:

  • MacBook Pro 14 inch :
    • from 1999€ with M3 chip
    • from €2499 with M3 Pro chip
    • from 3999€ with M3 Max chip
  • MacBook Pro 16 inch :
    • no version with M3 chip
    • from 2999€ with M3 Pro chip
    • from €4249 with M3 Max chip

The same applies to the iMac. On the outside, nothing changes, not even the colors. Apple’s all-in-one computer remains as slim and colorful as ever. The switch to M3 chips should make it even more efficient in everyday use. It will be available from November 07, starting at €1599.
