An alarming report reveals that 43% of the global population, equating to 3.45 billion individuals, still do not have access to mobile internet. This figure, from the latest GSMA report « State of Mobile Internet Connectivity 2024, » highlights the importance of enhanced collaboration between governments, operators, and international organizations to overcome connectivity challenges.
A concerning slowdown 🚨
Despite a continuous increase in mobile internet users, growth has slowed, with only 160 million new users in 2023 compared to 2022. This figure is lower than the more than 200 million annual additions between 2015 and 2021. Supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the report underscores persistent barriers to the adoption of mobile internet services.
Stark geographic disparities💔
The latest report describes the global connectivity gap, encompassing both usage and coverage shortfalls. Notable findings include :
- 4.6 billion people (57% of the global population) use mobile internet.
- 350 million people (4%) live in remote areas without access.
- 3.1 billion people (39%) live in areas covered by mobile internet services but do not use them.
- The least-connected region is sub-Saharan Africa, with only 27% mobile internet access, showing a 60% usage deficit.
Connecting the unconnected could generate $3.5 trillion for the global economy between 2023 and 2030, with 90% of benefits going to low- and middle-income countries. However, building adequate infrastructure requires an estimated $418 billion investment.
Key barriers to adoption📵
In low-income countries, the cost of devices and lack of digital skills are the main barriers to mobile internet use. Challenges include:
- Device Cost: An entry-level device represents 18% of the average monthly income, reaching up to 99% for the poorest in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Lack of Digital Skills: This barrier is particularly prominent in Asian countries.
- The absence of localized content, safety concerns, and limited access to other essential infrastructures further complicate the issue.
Towards relevant connectivity⁉️🎛️
While 43% of mobile internet users want to do more, they face various obstacles such as high data costs and limited connectivity experiences. Currently, one in five users accesses the internet via a 3G smartphone or basic phone, restricting access to more advanced digital services.
John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA, emphasizes the need for increased cooperation among all concerned parties to overcome these challenges. Raising awareness of mobile internet and its benefits, improving digital skills, and investing in local infrastructure are crucial for promoting digital inclusion.
