For over a year, Android has offered its users a tool to detect unknown Bluetooth trackers that may be following them without their knowledge. Until now, however, this system was limited to displaying alerts and providing basic options. For example, users could make the tracker emit a sound or locate it approximately on a map. Google recently announced a major update, introducing two new features that enhance both precision and privacy protection.

Precise location of Bluetooth trackers 🔍

With the “Find Nearby” feature, Android now allows users to locate an unknown Bluetooth tracker with great precision. When your smartphone detects a suspicious beacon, it can guide you to find it, even if it is well-hidden. This enhancement mirrors the system already available on Apple’s AirTags, which offers location accuracy down to the meter. With this new feature, Google aims to simplify the identification and neutralization of unauthorized tracking devices.

Temporary location pause 🔒

The second feature, “Temporary Location Pause,” adds an extra layer of security. It allows users to suspend location updates on their phone for up to 24 hours. This is designed to prevent unwanted Bluetooth trackers from exploiting your device’s location data. This functionality provides users with a window of opportunity to locate and physically disable suspicious beacons.

Towards better privacy protection 🛡️

These improvements align with Google’s ongoing commitment to security and privacy protection. The new options, currently rolling out, are available for trackers compatible with the Find My Device app. They complement existing alerts, which notify users when an unknown Bluetooth beacon is moving with them.

Google claims these updates will enable faster responses to unwanted tracking threats and improve the accuracy of actions taken. This is a welcome development as tracking devices become increasingly accessible and potentially harmful to personal privacy.
