As digital transformation accelerates, Uganda has kicked off a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen online safety and protect its citizens’ personal data. In total, 100,000 citizens and 500 employees will be trained and equipped to secure their data and actively support the country’s digital transition.
Six months to boost digital vigilance 🛡️
On September 3, the National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), in partnership with the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), launched a national awareness campaign called “Beera Ku Guard” (Stay on Your Guard). Scheduled to run for six months, the campaign aims to educate the population on essential digital safety practices.
The key focus areas include secure password management, online privacy protection, and safeguarding digital devices.
The campaign will leverage multiple channels—TV, radio, digital platforms, and community forums. It also includes training sessions for nearly 100,000 citizens and 500 employees from both public and private institutions. The goal is to reach about 70% of the population and foster a strong culture of cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity: a pillar of Uganda’s digital future 🛡️
According to Arnold Mangeni, Director of Information Security at NITA-U :
“We cannot talk about a modern, digital Uganda without placing security and trust at the center of our priorities. « Beera Ku Guard » is a call to action for all citizens, public servants, and private stakeholders to protect personal data and use digital platforms responsibly.”
The urgency is clear. While 49% of Ugandans have heard of cybersecurity, only 13.6% fully understand the implications of data protection, according to NITA-U. With the rapid growth of mobile financial services, online education, and e-governance, cyber threats are on the rise.
Building a national cybersecurity culture 🛡️
Beyond awareness, the campaign aims to:
- strengthen citizens’ trust in the digital ecosystem,
- improve business compliance with data protection laws,
- and create a safer, more inclusive digital environment.
By equipping citizens with practical tools to protect themselves, Uganda hopes to lay the foundation for a secure and resilient digital society—one capable of driving its ongoing digital transition.
