MTN Ghana, in partnership with Huawei, has announced what it describes as the world’s first large-scale commercial deployment of the Alpha Antenna. The AI-powered technology marks a significant milestone in the shift toward autonomous, self-optimizing telecom infrastructure across Africa.
A major step forward for African networks 🚀
Unveiled on February 14, 2026, in Accra, the rollout represents a global first at scale. The Alpha Antenna is designed to modernize mobile network operations, making them smarter, more responsive, and more efficient.
Early performance metrics are promising. Regional traffic increased by 6.8%, while maintenance efficiency reportedly improved by a factor of 30. Those gains highlight the operational impact of this new generation of intelligent antennas.
The deployment positions MTN Ghana as a frontrunner in the evolution toward Autonomous Driving Networks (ADN) — next-generation, self-managing telecom systems — both in Africa and beyond.
Automated, real-time network intelligence 🤖
At the core of the Alpha Antenna are two key technology modules.
The first, AISU (Antenna Information Sensor Unit), automatically captures real-time technical parameters from antennas. In practical terms, this reduces the need for on-site physical interventions, cutting operational costs and response times.
The second, AIMU (Array Information Mapping Unit), provides instant and precise visualization of the network’s topology. That means fewer configuration errors and more efficient remote management.
The system also enables dynamic beam adjustment. Instead of relying on periodic manual optimization, the network can automatically adapt coverage and capacity based on real-time demand. Optimization cycles that once took weeks can now be completed in minutes.

With the Alpha Antenna, the operating model itself shifts. Networks move from reactive, manual processes to proactive, AI-driven management.
The platform introduces a closed-loop system capable of collecting live data, executing precise control, and continuously optimizing performance without constant human oversight.
