The Cameroonian government officially launched its National Digital Health Strategic Plan (PSNSN) 2026–2030 on March 4, 2026, in Yaoundé. The roadmap aims to modernize healthcare services, improve access to care, and strengthen the management of health data across the country.

Moving toward a digitally enabled healthcare system 🔄📱

Cameroon unveiled its new digital health strategy during a ceremony chaired by Boukar, Inspector General of Administrative Services, representing the Minister of Public Health.

Through this initiative, the government aims to position digital technologies as a key driver for improving the performance of the national healthcare system. The strategy is also designed to expand access to care and improve the quality of services available to citizens.

The launch follows an evaluation of the previous Digital Health Strategic Plan (2020–2024). Conducted in 2025, the review highlighted several areas of progress, including improvements in digital health governance, the establishment of a national digital architecture, and the rollout of tools within the national health information system.

A digital health system still in its early stages 🏗️⚕️

Despite these advances, the evaluation also revealed that Cameroon’s digital health ecosystem remains at a relatively early stage of development. The country’s overall digital health maturity level was estimated at 1.8 out of 5.

According to health sector officials, this score underscores the need to strengthen several key areas. These include institutional frameworks, legal and regulatory structures, funding mechanisms, and coordination among stakeholders.

The new 2026–2030 plan aims to build on existing progress while accelerating the digital transformation of the healthcare sector.

Building an integrated digital health ecosystem 🔗💾

By 2030, Cameroonian authorities aim to establish an integrated and interoperable digital health ecosystem. The goal is to connect different health information systems across the sector to improve data sharing and care coordination.

The strategy also emphasizes strengthening the security and sovereignty of medical data. Protecting citizens’ health information is considered a priority, while ensuring that data can be accessed through digital platforms to support better decision-making and health planning.

This transformation is also expected to foster the development of patient-centered digital services, improving medical follow-up and ensuring greater continuity of care.

Eight strategic pillars to guide the transformation 🎯📊

The National Digital Health Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 is structured around eight key priorities. These include digital health governance, strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks, developing specialized human resources, and upgrading technological infrastructure.

The strategy also focuses on improving interoperability between information systems, encouraging technological innovation, and reinforcing data security.

Together, these measures aim to build a digital ecosystem capable of supporting public health policies more effectively. To fund the initiative, the government has allocated over 29 billion CFA francs (around $48 million) over five years.

Expanding access to care through technology 🌍🩺

Health authorities believe the program will significantly improve access to care, particularly for populations living in remote areas. Digital tools are also expected to reduce treatment delays and improve the traceability of medical interventions.

More broadly, digital technologies could enhance transparency in the management of the healthcare system and strengthen the country’s ability to respond to health emergencies.

The implementation of the plan will rely on collaboration between multiple stakeholders. The Ministry of Public Health will work alongside digital authorities, international technical and financial partners, private sector actors, civil society organizations, and academic institutions.

Through this strategy, Cameroon aims to position digital health as a key pillar of universal health coverage. Authorities are now calling for collective mobilization to turn this roadmap into tangible results for citizens.
