On July 17, a rumor swept through Cameroonian Twitter: WhatsApp had reportedly switched on a free mode, letting users send messages without touching their data plan. By the next day, using the app required a regular data connection again, leaving thousands of users puzzled by what looked less like a genuine innovation from Meta and more like a passing technical glitch.

WhatsApp Basic, the experience that felt too good to be true 🔓

For a few hours, many users noticed they could keep sending text messages even as their data balance read zero. Telma recalls her own surprise: her data plan was completely drained, yet her messages kept going through without interruption. Raoul — known in his Ngoa Ekele neighborhood in Yaoundé by the nickname « mindef » — went through the same thing while drafting a speech with his neighbor, before realizing the other man was seeing the exact same thing on his own phone.

This glitch, if it can even be called that, had one clear limit: only text messages got through without a connection. Heavier content — voice notes, images, documents — still needed an active connection, which suggests this was less a genuine lightweight mode than a one-off quirk in how data was being routed. Online, comparisons to Facebook Basic — a mode already known for running on minimal data — spread quickly, with some users even saying they’d stop topping up their data plan if the situation continued.

The very next day, WhatsApp went back to working normally, reviving questions about what had actually caused the glitch in the first place. Was it a bug in the app itself, or a network hiccup at Orange Cameroon? There’s still no official answer. Leila, another user, sums up the general mood: it felt too good to be true, and was probably just a temporary hiccup on the carrier’s side.

If anything, the episode says more about how dependent Cameroonian users have become on messaging apps — and how fragile local telecom infrastructure still is, where the smallest technical blip can spark a wave of hope that fades just as fast as it appeared.
