It’s the question that’s been dividing Cameroonian music fans on social media for weeks. A new rap prodigy is breaking algorithms and splitting opinion in equal measure. Invited by singer Mimie to perform at her July 25 concert, Babal is reported to have won over the crowd. His sound, often compared to Stromae’s, has pulled in a wide audience. But one controversy won’t go away: whether his tracks are genuinely his, at a time when generative AI is making deeper inroads into recording studios.

A fresh take on digital culture💻

Babal has built a musical universe deeply rooted in internet culture. His track « CTRL+Z.ppt » is the clearest example: the keyboard shortcut for undoing your last action becomes a metaphor for existence itself — no going back. A second track references having no « second chance, like in DBZ, » a direct nod to Dragon Ball Z. A third, sung in a Cameroonian vernacular language, speaks to the artist’s search for identity. Earlier tracks like « Enfant triste, » « Bandjoun, » and « La FAC » are reminders that Babal didn’t come from nowhere.

How AI is actually entering music production 🤖

The suspicion surrounding Babal isn’t happening in isolation — it’s part of a very real technological shift in the music industry. Tools like Suno now let anyone turn a simple text prompt into a finished song — melody, vocals, and instrumentation included — generated in under a minute. The platform reported more than 100 million users as of February 2026, and, in June 2026, crossed a $5 billion valuation in a new funding round.

In practice, AI can step in at several stages: brainstorming and writing lyrics, cleaning up existing text, generating sung vocals, or producing a fully finished track. Since July 2026, Suno has even offered a lyrics editor capable of applying natural-language edits — asking it to make a line « punchier, » for instance.

That technical sophistication is exactly what blurs the lines: a track that sounds « too polished » could just as easily reflect rigorous studio work as a pass through a tool like this. « The smart ones use Suno to generate the whole track with AI, then it’s recommended the artist makes it their own in the studio afterward, » says Roland, an active figure in the local music scene.

A view count that raises eyebrows 📈

Last July, Babal is reported to have crossed 100,000 YouTube views on « CTRL+Z.ppt » in just 29 hours, according to figures reviewed by our team. Three of his tracks are said to have now passed that mark, including TROBU, reportedly sitting above 296,000 views. On Apple Music Cameroon, his EP places five tracks simultaneously in the national Top 10, pushing past heavyweights like Fally Ipupa, Burna Boy, Asake, and Himra.

That gap is exactly what’s fueling the doubt: an artist who was unknown just months ago is posting growth curves that generative AI — trained on billions of data points of music — could, in theory, manufacture artificially, whether through automated streaming or algorithm-driven virality. « Music is evolving, and even if Babal gets help from AI, that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s a talented artist. Babal is a source of pride for Cameroon. We should be encouraging him — it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a style this distinctive in our rap scene, » one fan said.

Babal.png breaks his studio silence 🎧

Our colleagues at Brut recently sat down with the young rapper for a candid conversation. Asked whether he writes his own lyrics, Babal says he does, working alongside a sound engineer he prefers to keep anonymous and a collaborator he works with daily. Producer Nasir Kelyan has also confirmed working with him well before the EP dropped. The B.A.B.A.L project, he says, was three years in the making, following a deliberate arc from rap toward pop, passing through rock and amapiano along the way.
