Google Assistant’s days are numbered. Starting September 4, 2026, the company will begin phasing out its decade-old voice assistant on Android devices, handing the reins to Gemini, its AI-powered successor. The shift will ripple across most of Google’s device ecosystem.

Google Assistant’s last stand 📱

After months of hints, Google has made it official: Google Assistant is being discontinued on Android. In an email sent to users, the company confirmed it will start removing access to its legacy assistant on September 4, 2026 — the culmination of a gradual handover to Gemini, its AI-powered assistant.

The shutdown was originally planned for late 2025 but was pushed back to give users more time to adjust. Even now, the removal won’t hit everyone at once.

Google says the rollout will unfold over several weeks. As it reaches each device, users will lose access to Google Assistant entirely, with no option to switch back on their phones, tablets, or paired accessories. Gemini becomes the default assistant on supported devices.

Beyond the phone ⌚

The transition isn’t limited to Android smartphones. Google is also bringing Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches, compatible earbuds, and vehicles running Android Auto through a paired phone.

Cars with Google built-in (Android Automotive OS) are the exception — they’ll keep Google Assistant running past September 4, 2026. The move is the latest step in Google’s broader push to fold Gemini into its ecosystem, phasing out its older assistant in favor of an AI-driven experience.

The switch isn’t winning everyone over 😕

Google promises a smooth transition, but plenty of users aren’t convinced. On Reddit and Google’s own support forums, several reports describe complex custom automations that reportedly stop working properly under Gemini — Google offers « Gemini Actions » as a substitute, though users say they’re less capable than the automations Assistant used to handle.

The frustration appears sharpest on Android Auto, where several drivers report voice commands failing repeatedly, or Gemini continuing to talk after a task is already done. Google Home users have also flagged disrupted automations since switching to Gemini — one widely shared example involves an assistant unable to confirm whether a garage door is closed, something Google Assistant reportedly handled without issue.

Google has been rolling out steady Gemini updates — new automation triggers, better command targeting, conversational memory — apparently aiming to close these gaps over time. Still, for users who built elaborate automations around Google Assistant, the jump to Gemini doesn’t look painless just yet.
