In Senegal, cybersecurity and cyberdefense are becoming strategic priorities, particularly for the armed forces, whose communications and IT systems have to stay protected from cyberattacks. Against that backdrop, the armed forces’ directorate for communications and IT (the Direction des transmissions et de l’informatique des Armées), working with Africa Cyber Network (ACN), held a symposium on 16 October 2026 at the Senegal Institute of Defense (IDS). The event was part of the 50th anniversary of the armed forces’ Signals Corps, and ran under the theme “Cybersecurity, cyberdefense and artificial intelligence: strategic stakes for Senegal and its armed forces.”

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility 🔐

Beyond the strictly military questions, the symposium aimed to raise awareness of emerging digital threats among a range of stakeholders. It also served as a reminder of why information systems need protecting. The growing number of risks in cyberspace calls for a mobilization that reaches well beyond defense institutions.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces stressed the need for coordinated action to build a secure, resilient digital environment. “Building a safe, resilient and trustworthy digital environment must be a collective priority, involving all government bodies, businesses, training and research institutions, and citizens,” he said.

That stance points to cooperation between public administrations, private companies, research bodies and ordinary citizens. With digital threats constantly evolving, the security of information systems depends on how well these groups coordinate and build a shared culture of prevention.

Protecting military communications from cyberattacks 🛡️

For the armed forces, the stakes are especially high. The security of communication networks and IT systems underpins the protection of sensitive data, the continuity of communications and the smooth running of military operations.

That makes preventing cyberattacks and strengthening protective measures essential to keeping military structures running. Cyberdefense, then, is not just about reacting to IT incidents. It also means anticipating threats, securing digital infrastructure and keeping available the systems that operations rely on.

Adapting technical means and skills to new forms of threat is therefore a major challenge for the armed forces.

AI: opportunity, but stay vigilant 🤖

Alongside cybersecurity and cyberdefense, artificial intelligence featured prominently in the discussions. The technology opens up new ways to detect threats, analyze large volumes of data and support decision-makers.

It also calls for caution. To benefit from AI’s capabilities while limiting the risks, organizations need suitable oversight mechanisms, specialized skills and constant vigilance. Bringing AI into security systems means balancing technological innovation with risk management.

These reflections underline the need to pair technological change with the right expertise. That should help strengthen protective capabilities without overlooking the vulnerabilities these new tools can bring with them.

50 years of military communications meet the digital shift 📡

The Signals Corps’ half-century also offered a chance to look back at how military communications have evolved, and at the challenges of their digital transformation. With technology moving fast, armed forces must keep adapting their skills and equipment to the demands of cyberspace.

Through the symposium, the directorate and Africa Cyber Network say they want to help build a culture of digital security. For Senegal, the task now is to keep strengthening its cybersecurity and cyberdefense capabilities: better protecting digital infrastructure, safeguarding national sovereignty and building trust in the digital space, in a technology landscape that keeps shifting.
