A security flaw recently brought to light by a researcher revealed that someone could access photos stored on a phone despite its lock screen — through WhatsApp. The trick reportedly involves receiving a video call through the app, which could bypass protections like a PIN code or biometric authentication.
How does the exploit work ?🔍
According to reports, certain Android versions of WhatsApp remained vulnerable under specific circumstances. When a video call comes in, someone with physical access to the device could allegedly exploit certain features to open the media gallery and browse the images saved on the phone.
A discovery that’s rattling users 😟
The situation has raised plenty of questions among the app’s users. Many are pointing fingers at Meta, arguing the issue may be tied to the « Always allow » permission setting. Once enabled, that setting reportedly gives the app persistent access to the photos and videos stored on the device.
Meta acknowledges the issue 🏢
Responding to the backlash, Meta acknowledged the vulnerability while downplaying its scope. The company notes the flaw is limited to specific situations — namely, cases where someone already has physical access to the target phone. In early September 2026, the WhatsApp team confirmed on X that a fix was being rolled out to address the issue.
No remote hacking involved 🔒
Despite the concern it’s stirring up, this flaw doesn’t let anyone take over WhatsApp or hack conversations remotely. Exploiting it requires physical access to the targeted device, which significantly limits the risk for most users.
Staying alert 👀
While the fix continues rolling out, this discovery is a good reminder to keep an eye on app permissions and keep your phone updated. Users are also encouraged to regularly check their privacy and security settings to limit exposure of their personal data.
