Your phone could be blocked in Cameroon — here’s how to stay connected 📱⚠️

Cameroon’s customs duty regulations on imported mobile phones took effect on May 25, 2026. From this date, any undeclared device is liable to be blocked on Cameroonian networks. Whether you’re buying locally or bringing a handset back from abroad, here’s everything you need to know to stay on the right side of customs.

Buying a phone from a local vendor 🛒

Before you hand over a single franc, there’s one reflex worth building: dial *#06# on the device you’re considering to retrieve its IMEI number. IMEI in hand, send it as an SMS to 8050 — a process that costs 100 FCFA. You can also visit the website mpie.camcis.cm to check whether the phone has been cleared through customs. The answer is clear :

  • ✅ « Duty paid» : you’re good to go. The device has been processed through customs and can be purchased with confidence
  • ❌ « Duty unpaid » : your move. Request a 33% discount on the listed price to cover the customs fees you’ll need to absorb yourself. If the vendor refuses to negotiate, walk away.

This quick check costs you nothing and can save you a serious headache — it tells you whether the phone has already been cleared through customs before you’ve even started negotiating the price.

Ask for the receipt and customs clearance document 🧾

The invoice is your second line of defence. The IMEI must appear on it explicitly — photograph it before leaving the shop. Once the purchase is done, keep your customs clearance receipt somewhere safe: Cameroonian customs authorities have up to three years to audit any device in active use. A compliant phone will never trigger a blocking notification.

When you buy your phone abroad ✈️

The rule here is simple: upon arrival at the airport or seaport, declare your device immediately at the customs desk. The applicable tax stands at 33.05% of the phone’s declared value, in exchange for which you’ll receive a CEMAC receipt bearing your IMEI.
Forgot to declare? No need to panic — you have 30 days from your first connection to a Cameroonian network to regularise your situation via the official portal portail.douanes.cm. After that window closes, your device will be automatically blocked.

Found out your phone isn’t cleared after you’ve already bought it ?🔍

Start by checking your deadline: you have 30 days from the moment you inserted your SIM card — MTN, Orange, or Camtel — to sort things out. The online process works as follows:

  1. Go to portail.douanes.cm
  2. Click on Payment of phone duties and taxes
  3. Enter your IMEI — the system automatically calculates the 33.05% tax
  4. Pay via MTN MoMo or Orange Money
  5. Receive your electronic receipt by SMS or email. Your device will be unblocked within 24 hours of payment.

Authorised distributors as a safe alternative 🏪

If you’d rather sidestep the complexity entirely, authorised distributors remain the most reliable option. These include Orange, MTN, Camtel, Arno, Glotelho, and SMAT. The advantages speak for themselves: devices already cleared by customs, an official invoice, a 12-month warranty, and dedicated after-sales support.
The trade-off? Their prices run 15 to 25% higher than what you’d find at Mokolo market — a gap explained by compliance costs, but one that remains a real barrier for many consumers.

The three mistakes you cannot afford to make 🚫

  • Never take a vendor’s word for it: only the SMS to 8050 carries official weight.
  • Be suspicious of unusually low prices: an iPhone 15 listed at 450,000 FCFA is a red flag — the customs duty alone on a device at that price point exceeds 300,000 FCFA.
  • Ignore fraudulent messages: scammers are impersonating the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART) with warnings such as « Your phone will be suspended — you have 7 days to pay before total disconnection. » These are scams. The only legitimate procedure runs through the customs portal.

No mobile phone will be able to operate on Cameroonian networks without going through the customs clearance process. The rules are clear; the tools are within reach — it’s up to every consumer to use them.
